This is an ongoing project and the information is liable to amendment in the light of future research
Pontesbury, Shropshire, is a small village approximately 7 miles south-west of Shrewsbury. There were Elks families living there from the middle of the 17th Century onwards. Meole Brace, another village just west of Shewsbury, shared some of the family lines.

William Elkes, born circa 1814 in Pontesbury (1881 census). His wife's name was Sarah (born High Ercall, circa 1827). His (their?) son James Elkes, born circa 1857 in Pontesbury was probably the one whose parents were William and Elizabeth Elks below. Hence the name of his first wife was Elizabeth ------, who probably died circa 1860. He then married Sarah Jones (Proudley) at Pontesbury on 29 October 1863.
