The Matthews family who lived at Sturry, near Canterbury in Kent, originally came from Bedfordshire, via Cambridgeshire and, briefly, Sussex. The family line can be traced back, with a fair degree of certainty, to Sutton in Bedfordshire, where a Robert Matthews was baptised in 1706. From there the links are more tenuous, first to Robert Matthews of Campton and then to a Robert Matthews, son of Thomas Matthews, baptised in Barton in the Clay (nowadays Barton-le-Clay) in 1651. These are based on the lack of other suitable candidates born with the right names and at the right time. Thomas Matthews was, in turn, the son of John Matthews, baptised in 1612. The possible origins of John Matthews are being investigated.
That said, there seems to be a general movement in each generation, which follows an arc swinging north-eastwards from Barton-le-Clay, through Campton and Shefford, to Sutton, Wrestlingsworth and then to Guilden Morden in Cambridgeshire. Although George Matthews moved to Brighton, Sussex and thence to Sturry, many other members of the Matthews family remained in the Wrestlingsworth/Guilden Morden area, and live there to this day.

1. Ruth Matthews, born 3 November 1896 at Little Hall House, Tyler Hill, Canterbury, Kent; died 15 June 1983 at Bekesbourne, Canterbury. She was the daughter of 2. George James Fuller Matthews and 3. Mary Jane Salvage. She married William Peach at St. Albans Church, Streatham Park, London on 28 May 1918. They had two children, both of whom are still alive.
2. George James Fuller Matthews, born 20 February 1863 at Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire, died 12 June 1949 at Brambles Farm, Sturry, Canterbury. At birth he was just named James Matthews. He was the son of 5. Ellen Matthews (father unknown). He initially worked in Brighton as a groom but after his marriage became a gamekeeper, then a farmer, first at Shelford Farm, Canterbury, then at Vale Farm, Sturry until he retired. He married 3. Mary Jane Salvage at St. Paul's Church, Brighton on 10 May 1884.
3. Mary Jane Salvage, born in Brighton on 6 April 1866, died at Brambles Farm, Sturry on 11 December 1955. She was the daughter of 6. James Sayers Salvage and 7. Rosanna Harman.

5. Ellen Matthews, born 1 March 1842 in Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire; died at Little Green, Guilden Morden on 9 July 1926. She was the daughter of 10. Robert Matthews and 11. Sophia Wood. On 16 November 1878 she married James Webb of Steeple Morden, Cambridgshire (born 1845, son of William Brown Webb and his wife Ann, formerly Parish), in Hunslet, Leeds, and had two children by him, John and David. By 1891 they had returned to live in Guilden Morden.
6. James Sayers Salvage, baptised 6 March 1826 in Blucher Place, Brighton, Sussex; died at 5 Rock Place, Brighton on 1 December 1887. He was the son of 12. Thomas Salvage and 13. Henrietta Sayers. Throughout his life he was a fisherman. He married 7. Rosanna Harman at St. Nicholas Church, Brighton on 4 October 1846.

22. James Wood, born circa 1773, buried 23 November 1823 at Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire. The name is also spelt WOODS. James Woods of Abington (Pigotts), bachelor, married Mercy Hollingsworth at Guilden Morden on 4 August 1806.

Following the marriage of Mercy Hollingsworth to James Woods, there is one child, James Woods, with parents James & Mercy Woods. The next three children give the parents names as James and Martha Wood. Martha Woods appears in the census of 1841 with her two sons Benjamin and John. There is no Mercy Wood listed. The only time the name Mercy Woods reappears is at her death in 1848. No death can be found for a Martha Woods, although she is absent in the 1851 census. Although ages can be rounded on the 1841 census, her age listed at the time, 60, would be correct for Mercy Hollingsworth. The use of Martha may come from her mother's name - a sister to Mercy Hollingsworth called Martha died in infancy. Perhaps most significant of all is that the marriage indexes for Cambridgeshire do not show a marriage of a James Wood to anyone called Martha, nor can one be found in the adjoining counties. On the evidence, it seems that Martha Woods was the former Mercy Hollingsworth.

Notes: From the available evidence there does not appear to be any birth recorded in Bedfordshire of a John Matthews about this time except for the son of William Mathew baptised at Husborne Crawley, about 13 miles away, in 1588. This is possibility being investigated.
