Albert Elks, his family, parents and ancestors
My great-grandfather was called William Edward Elks and he was born in 1856 in Staffordshire, England. My grandfather John Elks was born in Bloxwich, Staffordshire in 1885 and my father, Albert Edward Elks, in 1910. I have the names and date of birth for all my father's brothers and sisters and some other family details such as marriages and the names of my cousins, but very few dates.
In 1912 John Elks and his wife Lizzie (maiden name Peach) moved to Dover, Kent and most of their other children were born there. Three of them are still alive, sadly the rest, my father included, have gone.
The surname Elks
About half of the known people with the Elks surname live in Britain, about one third of them in the Midlands, notably Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Most of the earliest records are concentrated in Shropshire, although the first record of the name found so far is the baptism of an Elizabeth Elks in Gloucestershire in 1548. This contrasts with a family tradition that originally the family came from Germany, but there does not seem to be any evidence to support this and bearing in mind the early localised distribution it is possible that the name is of Saxon (Mercian) origin. Considering some spellings of the Elks family name, it is interesting to see that the derivation of the name of Ilkeston, a town in Derbyshire, is from Ealac's Hill and that, over the centuries, the name has been spelt Elcasdon, Elkesdon, Helchesdun, Hilkesdon, Hilkisdon

1. Albert Edward Elks, born in the Canal Tavern, Bloxwich, Staffordshire, on 1 November 1910; died in Canterbury, Kent on 15 March 1973. He worked as a miner in the Kent Coalfield from 1924 to 1969, starting at Tilmanstone at the age of 14, then at Bettshanger and, from 1942, at Chislet. He was the son of 2. John Elks and 3. Lizzie Peach. He married Daisy Ellen Ballard in Dover on 26 December 1933. They had four children, all of whom are still alive.

2. John Elks, born at Wallington Heath, Bloxwich, Staffs on 19 April 1885; died at Dover, Kent on 2 May 1950. Moved to Kent in 1912 to work in the Kent Coalfield. Became secretary to the Kent Mineworkers Association, a post he held until the day he died. He was the son of 4. William Edward Elks and 5. Elizabeth Martin. He married 3. Lizzie Peach at Bloxwich, Staffs on 15 March 1908.

4. William Edward Elks, born at Ann Street, Rushall, Staffs on 4 June 1856; died at Wallington Heath, Bloxwich, Staffs on 25 January 1928. At birth his surname was spelt HELKS, changed to ELKES by 1878 and ELKS by 1883. He was the son of 8. John Helks and 9. Hannah Webster. He began as a miner but, after an accident in which he lost a leg, he became a check weighman at Pelsall Colliery, Staffs. He married 5. Elizabeth Martin at Pelsall, Staffs on 2 June 1878.

6. Thomas Peach, born at The Green, Darlaston, Staffs on 15 November 1862; emigrated to Australia circa 1912 and died at Rockvale, New South Wales in 1931 (both he and his wife are buried in Woronora Cemetery, near Sutherland, NSW). He was the son of 12. Thomas Peach and 13. Betsy Leech. At the time of his marriage he worked for the railways, in 1901 was a colliery bank foreman and circa 1908 became the landlord at the Canal Tavern, Bloxwich. He married 7. Mary Jane Wilkinson at St. Paul's Church, Walsall on 16 March 1884.
7. Mary Jane Wilkinson, born circa 1862 in Lane Head, near Bloxwich, Staffordshire; emigrated to Australia with her husband circa 1912 and died at 112 Grand Parade, Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney Australia, on 9 August 1953. She was the daughter of 14. John Wilkinson and 15. ------ ------
NOTE: In previous versions of this Family Tree, the mother of Mary Jane Wilkinson was given as Martha Horton. It now seems likely that this is incorrect and research is being carried out to ascertain the correct parentage. Publication of the 1901 Census has enabled her place of birth to be identified and this is currently being investigated.

8. John Elks, baptised 6 January 1822 at Meole Brace, Shropshire; died 2 July 1871 at Leamore, Bloxwich, Staffs. The name may also be spelt HELKS, HILKS or ELKES. He was an ironstone miner, later a coal miner. He was the son of 16. William Elks and 17. Sarah Ramsell. He married 9. Hannah Webster at Walsall Wood, Staffs on 10 July 1847. His age at death was given as 53, so he may have been born as early as 1818, but this is probably an error.
9. Hannah Webster, baptised in Fradley, Lichfield, Staffs on 12 February 1828; died 10 June 1905 at 8 Victoria Terrace, Leamore, Staffordshire. She was the daughter of 18. Thomas Webster and 19. Ann Bosten. She remarried on 2 April 1882 to Edward Hart, a widower, at St. John's Church, Walsall, Staffs.

12. Thomas Peach, born in Newhall, Derbyshire on 20 January 1838; died 3 January 1920 at 97 Station Street, Cheslyn Hay, Cannock. The name is also spelt PEECH. He was the son of 24. Samuel Peach and 25. Mary Debroux. He married 13. Betsy Leech at Wednesbury on 1 February 1858. After her death he remarried to a widow, Mary Ann Franks, in 1905. His occupation was coal miner (colliery banksman in later life).
13. Betsy Leech, born circa 1838 at Toll End, Tipton, Staffs; died 17 March 1902 at Bridgetown, Cannock, Staffs.
Note: According to her marriage certificate, her father's name was John Leech, but examination of the Staffordshire Census for 1841 and 1851 reveals that the only Betsey Leech listed was the daughter of James and Hannah Leech, born in 1841. Nor can any record of her birth be located. It is possible that when she married in 1858 she was underage and hence the name of her father and her age of 21 were both false. Her husband, Thomas Peach was also underage, nearly a year younger than stated on the marriage certificate.

Sarah Ramsell at St. Alkmund Church, Shrewsbury on 26 May 1817. Occupation given as labourer. Lived at Hokoe Gate (Hooker Gate) 1817-1831.

Note: There were five children with that name born between 1791 and 1797, three of whom died. Although there is slight evidence to suggest that she was the daughter of Edward Ramsell and Martha Boothby born in 1797, her age according to the various census from 1851 to 1871 (see below) would give her date of birth some years earlier, 1791 or 1793, even though both the children born in those years subsequently died before 1795. However, they were all descended from William and Catherine Ramsell, who were either the grandparents or great-grandparents of Sarah.
